What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that exfoliates and removes the superficial layer of dry, dead skin cells to improve the overall appearance and texture of the skin. This treatment is commonly used to address various skin concerns, such as dull complexion, uneven skin tone, age spots, acne scars, and fine lines.

Types of Microdermabrasion

There are two main types of microdermabrasion:
-
Crystal Microdermabrasion: This method uses a handheld device to spray fine crystals (such as aluminum oxide or sodium bicarbonate) onto the skin. The crystals gently abrade the skin's surface, and a vacuum mechanism simultaneously suctions away the crystals and dead skin cells.
-
Diamond-Tip Microdermabrasion: This technique employs a diamond-tipped wand that is moved across the skin to exfoliate it. The diamond tip abrades the skin, and a vacuum suctions away the exfoliated particles and dead skin cells. This method allows for more precise treatment and is often preferred for sensitive areas like around the eyes.

Some of the benefits of Microdermabrasion include:

-
Improved skin texture: Microdermabrasion exfoliates the skin, helping to remove dead skin cells and promoting the growth of new, healthy cells, which can result in smoother skin texture.
-
Even skin tone: By removing the top layer of skin, microdermabrasion can help to reduce the appearance of sun damage, age spots, and hyperpigmentation, leading to a more even skin tone.
-
Reduced fine lines and wrinkles: The exfoliation and stimulation of cell growth from microdermabrasion can help to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving the skin a more youthful look.
-
Improved skin care product absorption: By removing the barrier of dead skin cells, microdermabrasion can enhance the penetration and effectiveness of skincare products, allowing them to better nourish the skin.
-
Pore size reduction: Microdermabrasion can help to unclog pores and reduce their size, leading to clearer, less congested skin.
-
Boosted collagen production: The exfoliation process of microdermabrasion can stimulate collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness.
-
Minimal downtime: Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure with little to no downtime, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules.

It's important to note that individual results may vary, and it's recommended to consult with a skincare professional to determine if microdermabrasion is suitable for your skin concerns.

Procedure

-
Preparation: The skin is cleansed to remove makeup, oils, and impurities.
-
Exfoliation: The microdermabrasion device is used to exfoliate the skin, either with crystals or a diamond tip.
-
Suction: Dead skin cells and exfoliated particles are suctioned away during the treatment.
-
Post-Treatment: Hydrating and soothing products are applied to the skin to calm any irritation.

Pre-Treatment:

-
Please avoid from using any harsh products such as retinols or chemicals peels on the area to be treated 1 week prior to appointment.
-
If possible, avoid exfoliating your skin.

Post-Treatment:

-
Avoid scrubbing or using harsh products on your treated area for about one week.
-
Avoid direct sun exposure.
-
No downtime.

Contraindications to Microdermabrasion:

-
Pregnancy: The changes in hormones during pregnancy can make the skin much more sensitive to treatments. So we advise clients who regularly have microdermabrasion’s to have a break whilst they are pregnant. We do understand also that changes in the skin can result in pigmentation and whilst microdermabrasion can help for the reasons explained above it is advisable to wait until after
-
Severe Acne. Microdermabrasion could spread any bacteria and therefore any low grade infection due to its ability to move deep in the skin.
-
Congested skin with grade 4 acne should not be treated.
-
Steroid creams or medication such as Roaccutane/accutane. This massively thins the skin. Please leave for at least 6 months after the last use of Roaccutane/accutane before doing a microdermabrasion treatment.
-
Diabetes clients would need written permission from the GP. Even with a letter off their GP if you don’t feel comfortable or if you have any doubts then do not do the treatment. Diabetes affects the nerves and blood circulation and oxygen supply and any damage to the skin will take much longer to heal.
-
Infection skin disorders: Impetigo, warts, Rosacea must not be treated with microdermabrasion.
-
Auto -immune disorders
-
Within 14 days of botox or facial fillers do not treat. The products injected can migrate and need time to settle plus you don’t want to break down new fillers.
-
Allow two weeks between the clients last lazer treatments before doing a microdermabrasion.
-
Viral Infections such as herpes and warts.
-
Fungal infections such as Ringworm
-
Bacterial infections such as impetigo, boils, cellulitis, folliculitis

What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that involves using fine needles to create tiny, controlled punctures in the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate the body's natural wound healing processes, leading to increased production of collagen and elastin, which are key components of healthy, youthful-looking skin.

Some of the benefits of microdermabrasion include:

-
Improves Skin Texture and Tone: Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and large pores.
-
Reduces Scars: Effective in diminishing acne scars and surgical scars.
-
Enhances Absorption: Increases the absorption and efficacy of topical skincare products.
-
Minimizes Hyperpigmentation: Helps even out skin tone by reducing the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
-
Stimulates Collagen Production: Promotes firmer, more resilient skin.

Procedure

-
Preparation: The skin is cleansed, and a numbing cream is applied to minimize discomfort.
-
Microneedling: A device with fine needles is stamped over the skin, creating micro-injuries.
-
Post-Treatment: The skin may be red and sensitive, similar to a mild sunburn. Healing serums and moisturizers are often applied to soothe and hydrate the skin.

Recovery and Side Effects

-
Recovery Time: Typically, recovery time is minimal, with most redness and sensitivity subsiding within a few days.
-
Side Effects: Common side effects include redness, swelling, and mild discomfort. Rarely, more severe reactions like infection or prolonged redness can occur.

What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a non-invasive exfoliating treatment that involves using a sterile surgical scalpel to gently scrape off the top layer of dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (often referred to as "peach fuzz") from the face. This procedure aims to create smoother, brighter skin by promoting cell turnover and allowing for better absorption of skincare products.

Some of the benefits of Dermaplaning include:

-
Exfoliation: Removes dead skin cells, resulting in a smoother skin texture.
-
Enhanced Product Absorption: Improves the effectiveness of topical skincare products by allowing them to penetrate more deeply.
-
Smooth Makeup Application: Creates a smooth canvas for makeup, resulting in a more flawless finish.
-
Immediate Results: Provides an instant glow and smoother skin without downtime.

Procedure

-
Preparation: The skin is thoroughly cleansed and dried to ensure it is free of oils and makeup.
-
Dermaplaning: A trained professional uses a sterile surgical scalpel to gently scrape the skin in small, upward motions.
-
Post-Treatment: After the procedure, soothing and hydrating products are applied to calm the skin.

Recovery and Side Effects

-
Recovery Time: Dermaplaning requires no downtime, and any redness usually subsides within a few hours.
-
Side Effects: Minimal side effects, such as slight redness or sensitivity, may occur. The procedure is generally well-tolerated.

Dermaplaning, while generally safe, does have certain contraindications. It is important to be aware of these to avoid potential adverse effects or complications. Here are the primary contraindications for dermaplaning:

-
Active Acne: Those with active acne or pustular outbreaks should avoid dermaplaning as it can spread bacteria and exacerbate the condition.
-
Rosacea: Individuals with rosacea or severe redness may experience increased irritation or flare-ups from the procedure.
-
Eczema or Psoriasis: Those with these conditions may find that dermaplaning worsens their symptoms, as the procedure can irritate sensitive or inflamed skin.
-
Sunburn: Skin that is sunburned or otherwise irritated should not undergo dermaplaning until it has fully healed.
-
Active Skin Infections: Any bacterial, viral, or fungal infections on the face, such as herpes simplex (cold sores), are contraindications as dermaplaning could exacerbate the infection or cause it to spread.
-
Skin Allergies or Rashes: Individuals with active allergic reactions or rashes should avoid dermaplaning until these conditions are resolved.
-
Recent Chemical Peels or Other Exfoliating Treatments: If you've had a chemical peel, microdermabrasion, or other exfoliating treatments recently, it is advisable to wait until the skin has fully recovered before undergoing dermaplaning.
-
Blood Clotting Disorders: Those with clotting disorders or who are taking blood thinners should consult with a healthcare provider before considering dermaplaning, as there is a minor risk of cuts or abrasions.
-
Sensitive Skin: Extremely sensitive skin might react adversely to dermaplaning. A patch test or consultation with a skincare professional can help determine suitability.
-
Compromised Skin Barrier: If the skin barrier is compromised due to conditions like dermatitis or if the skin is healing from a recent injury or surgery, dermaplaning should be avoided.

It is essential to have a consultation with a licensed and experienced skincare professional before undergoing dermaplaning. They can assess your skin type, condition, and any contraindications to ensure the treatment is safe and suitable for you.
